A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens, which lies behind the iris and the pupil. The lens works much like a camera lens, focusing light onto the retina at the back of the eye and adjusting focus to see things clearly up close and far away. When the lens becomes cloudy, it can interfere with the passage of light, leading to blurred or dimmed vision.
Symptoms of Cataracts:
- Blurred or hazy vision
- Increased difficulty with vision at night
- Sensitivity to light and glare
- Seeing “halos” around lights
- Frequent changes in eyeglass or contact lens prescription
- Fading or yellowing of colors
- Double vision in a single eye
How Are Cataracts Treated? Treatment for cataracts depends on the severity of the condition and how much it interferes with daily activities.
- Early Stages: In the early stages, vision may be improved with new eyeglasses, better lighting, or magnifying lenses. It’s also important to protect the eyes from UV light by wearing sunglasses and a hat with a brim.
- Advanced Stages: When cataracts interfere significantly with daily life, cataract surgery is the most effective treatment. During surgery, the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with a clear, artificial intraocular lens (IOL). The procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis and has a high success rate.
- Post-Surgery Care: After surgery, patients need to take eye drops to prevent infection and inflammation, and they will likely experience significant improvement in vision within a few days to weeks. It’s important to follow the doctor’s instructions and attend follow-up appointments to ensure proper healing.
Prevention Tips:
